Interstellar

Overall Rating: 9/10
Two Words to Describe it: Flawed Masterpiece

Whenever Christopher Nolan releases a new film, there is always a buzz in the air at the cinema. This is because there is no other filmmaker currently living who is as ambitious, inventive and obsessive over detail as Mr Nolan and I am in the camp that believes that he has never made a bad film. After seeing Interstellar, I can gleefully announce I am still in that camp. I understand, however, that Interstellar is a film that will divide opinion more than most films; everyone I've spoken to it about has either loved it or hated it. The soundtrack, plot and some of the acting is very divisive but I personally adored all 3 of these aspects of the film, with Matthew Mcconaughey excellent as the main character Cooper, and his performance and relationship with his daughter Murph keeps us grounded on Earth as the film travels into the stars. A few people have complained that the organ music used in the soundtrack is too loud and drowns out some dialogue but I had no issues with it, indeed, the soundtrack is actually one of my favourites on any film. Some of the visuals used in the film, especially the wormhole, are beyond stunning and Interstellar must be watched in the cinema or on blu-ray for the full effect. Even though I had no queries with the plot, I can see why some moviegoers had issues with it as some parts of it are very far-fetched, though I see them as imaginative and thought provoking. Actually, I have only ever watched two or three more movies that are more thought provoking than Interstellar - Enemy, which I thoroughly recommend, and Birdman (the review of which is coming soon). Although Mcconaughey is a solid lead, and Anne Hathaway is great as Dr Brand (also watch out for two humorous robot assistants), there is one cast member (who I cannot name as it will ruin the film) that turns in one of the worst performances of his career, and that hinders the film slightly. I also feel the ending was dealt with very sloppily and there is a point that the movie could have ended at perfectly, but instead drags on for another 15 minutes. Overall, Interstellar is another ground-breaking film from Christopher Nolan which I thoroughly enjoyed and can't wait to see where he goes next.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Overall Rating: 10/10
One Word to Describe it: Spiffing!

Kingsman is the latest film from the brilliant mind of Matthew Vaughn-who's back catalogue includes the underrated Layer Cake and the hugely enjoyable Kick Ass-and has transferred some of the elements from those films, his great action set pieces for example, into Kingsman. Think what Kick Ass was to superhero movies and you're not far away as to what Kingsman is to spy movies. Complete with gentleman mentor (played supremely well by Colin Firth, who looks like he relished the chance to let loose in this film), insane over the top villain (the lisping Samuel L Jackson) and a henchman with a unique characteristic trait-the blade legged Gazelle (Sofia Boutella). Kingsman does an awesome job of paying homage to old school spy movies whilst also being humorously self aware, and there are some jaw dropping, incredible action sequences driven even more effectively by Vaughn's unique camera work. Kingsman also provides a break out role for young Taron Egerton, who does a fantastic job of portraying the main character Eggsy-this kid will go places, you read it hear first. Overall, Kingsman is a well directed, action packed spy movie that knows exactly what it is and more than delivers, and you will be hard pushed to find a more entertaining way to spend 2 hours.
