How to Train your Dragon 2

A Special 600 Views Celebratory Review!

Thanks so much for helping us reach 600 views!!! In response to all you loyal viewers reading our reviews we have decided to reward you with a review of the best animated film of the year so far!!! Thanks for all your support and without you this would not be possible!!!

Overall Rating: 10/10
One Word to Describe it: Everything!

How to Train your Dragon 2 is the complete animated film, right up there with the Lion King and Toy Story 3 as an action packed emotional masterpiece. I just had to get that out in the open straight away. I cannot think (in my biased opinion) of a single negative about this film. Set 5 years on from the previous film, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the 3rd has developed from scrawny teenager into dashing adult intent on exploring the world away from his island of Berk with Toothless, his dragon and best friend. Their relationship is a core part of the film and is a pleasure to watch. It is tested to the limit however, when an evil dragon collecting warlord called Drago tries to capture and enslave the dragons of Berk. Hiccup faces this challenge with his father Stoick, who is determined to make Hiccup chief although Hiccup does not feel ready for this responsibility, and his newly discovered mother Valka, who has been in hiding for 20 years whilst also rescuing and befriending dragons that have been hurt or maimed by Drago. Hiccup really develops as a man throughout the movie and there is a point where his relationship with Toothless is taken to the brink when a certain event occurs(many of the audience in the cinema cried at this scene, a la Toy Story 3). DreamWorks has beautifully animated the whole film and the flight scenes with Hiccup and Toothless are simply breath-taking, with some landscapes actually looking like they are live action. The film climaxes in an epic battle between Hiccup and Drago that does not let the film down and is, at times, spectacular. I would not hesitate to recommend that DreamWorks continue this franchise and (I didn't believe i'd ever say this) they have pushed deep into Pixar territory with How to Train your Dragon 2. Watch it at as soon as possible!!!!!

22 Jump Street

Overall rating 7/10
Overall laughs 8

22 Jump street is the sequel to the hugely successful movie: 21 jump street, this time our favourite hero combo go to college to track down and infiltrate the use and distribution of a new drug which has already claimed one victim. The movie contains plenty of humour, over the top violence and a generous dollop of swearing which all make it a highly enjoyable film. In saying that 22 jump street is one of those movies that you watch, laugh and then forget as soon as you leave the cinema, the plot is very shallow and the film might be called bland and boring by some, it is definitely not thought provoking as the whole movie summed up is: find drug dealer -> bro-mance breakup as they go their separate ways -> friends again to catch baddies -> weird car chase -> bffs -> awesome ending credits. So all in all very 'disney' and predictable. I haven't been to the cinema in about 4 months since the Lego Movie, so to be honest any movie I see I'll probably enjoy!

Edge of Tomorrow

Overall Rating: 9/10
One Word to Describe it: Repetitive (in a good way)

Edge of Tomorrow is a thrilling sci-fi blockbuster-yes, another one-starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as soldiers William Cage and Rita Vrataski fighting an invading alien race known as the Mimics. Cruise brilliantly plays the cowardly US Major Cage desperate to avoid combat at all costs and as a result is sent to the front line to fight the Mimics at Normandy beach. He ends up killing a special Mimic that covers him in its blood and he dies. This brings the 'live, die, repeat' element into play and is brilliantly integrated into the movie as a tool to aid the protagonists in their quest to defeat the mimics. So much so, that when the cycle ceases near the end of the film it seems like the best part of Edge of Tomorrow has come and gone. However, Cage and Blunt's chemistry carries the film along nicely, both seeming at ease with each others presence. Overall, Edge of Tomorrow is joy to watch and well worth going to see this summer.

Xmen: Days of Future Past

Overall Rating: 10/10
One Word to Describe it: Spectacular

Xmen: Days of Future Past is the explosive return to the Xmen series for director Bryan Singer who left after making X2, plunging the Xmen series into the abyss of shit that was Xmen: The Last Stand. The road to recovery had begun with the very good Xmen: First Class, but now it is time for Singer to retake the reigns. And what a comeback . Days of Future Past begins in a dark, bleak future where Sentinels monitor the Earth and have eliminated any threat that mutants posed to humans, destroying most of humanity in the process, with only a handful of mutants surviving including Magneto, Professor X and Wolverine. They decide their only remaining course of action is to send back Wolverine into 1973 and prevent the cause of the Sentinel Project- Mystique killing Bolivar Trask, the creator of the Sentinels. This reintroduces us to James McAvoy as the younger Professor X, who does a brilliant job of humanising the emotionally hurt professor. With a little persuasion from Wolverine, he agrees to aid him along with Beast. However this involves breaking out the Xmen's ever present nemesis-Magneto, who is also played very well by Michael Fassebender-from the Pentagon. This requires a little help from a certain silver haired mutant and the scene after they escape the prison, filmed from the perspective of the super quick mutant, is one of the greatest cinematic sequences you're likely to see this year. The film reaches its conclusion when-surprise-Magneto betrays Xavier as he is willing to do anything for his cause, and climaxes in an epic act of a stadium being relocated to the White House by Magneto and a battle of wits and minds ensues. Xmen: Days of Future Past is without a doubt the best Xmen film ever made and, if you stay to watch the post credits scene, there is all the more reason to get hyped up over the next instalment.

The Art of Flight

The Art of Flight
Overall rating: 9/10
Visual effects: >10/10
One word description: Awe-inspiring
Director: Curt Morgan
Cast/ riders: Travis Rice, Mark Landvik, John Jackson, Nicolas Müller, Scotty Lago, Bjorn Leines, David Carrier Porcheron "DCP", Jeremy Jones, Pat Moore, Eero Niemela, Kyle Clancy, Eric Willett, Bode Merrill, Jack Mitrani, Luke Mitrani, Mark McMorris, Jake Blauvelt

The Art of Flight, one of the most expensive and mind-boggling snowboard film ever, brought to you by Red Bull and Brain Farm Productions, received a lot of hype (in the snowboard community) before it's release in 2011, and certainly lived up to the expectations. Although it is a snowboard film, the film was aimed at every one and is essentially trying to show what snowboarding really is to snowboarder. The film follows Professional snowboarder Travis Rice across three continents to some of the most jaw-dropping scenery and shows riders performing breathtaking tricks in the most stunning visuals (thanks to the hefty budget of Red Bull). During the film we are shown the different ups and downs of snowboarding, what its like when everything is perfect, with blue skies, fresh snow and almost endless fuel in the chopper, and what its like when thing don't go exactly to plan, with strong winds, a helicopter broken down on the edge of a cliff, and avalanches almost killing friends. As with most sports films, the sounds track is very important, and with Red Bull owning record deals with artist such as M83 the sound track delivers an extra bit of crazy to this master piece of a film. All this and there's the voice of famous riders speaking in a philosophical guru kinda way. I think that no matter what your view is on extreme sports, this film will not fail to impress you and change your thoughts on the lunatics who we see once every four years throwing them selves around on snow at the Winter Olympics.

Tron: Legacy

Overall Rating: 7/10
One Word to Describe it: Decent

The sequel to the 1982 science fiction success of Tron, Tron: Legacy is an average film that is able to do an ok job in filling its predecessor's boots. The acting trio of Jeff Bridges, Garrett Headland and Olivia Wilde are mediocre in their dialogue and chemistry but do a good job in keeping the film moving along and don't really do anything particularly wrong. The plot, also, is distinctly lukewarm. Throughout most of Tron: Legacy the picture is dark and this causes some problems in seeing what is going on, so in the last 5 minutes when light finally comes into the film you are left slightly stunned. In fact, one of the only outstanding aspects of this film is the soundtrack, courtesy of Daft Punk. Mixing deep electronic tones with instrumental magic, the soundtrack keeps the (at some times boring) film chugging along nicely. The visual effects are also commendable, with blues, oranges and blacks weaved together effectively, creating a futuristic look around the movie. All in all, Tron: Legacy is a good way to spend 2 and a half hours when there's nothing really else to do, but if you can't stomach it then at least buy Daft Punk's soundtrack.

Ender's Game

Stupidity- 10/10

Mass Alien Genocide By Accident (MAGBA) rating- 10/10

Overall rating- 2/10

Ender's game is definitely without a shadow of a doubt the second worst film I have ever seen in my life. For a start who in their right mind would call their child Ender, it's almost as if they knew he will END the war and save the day, as well as getting bullied. So to sum up quickly the entire plot of the film:

Boy has a worryingly suspicious bond with his sister
Boy goes to fancy schmancy space academy
Boy beats a bully up, after beating him on a tablet game
Boy thinks he is out of space school
Boy is recruited by Indiana Jones to go to extra fancy schmancy space school
Boy trains up and defies all odds to win a "capture the other teams hole game" (in zero gravity)
Boy wears a funny yellow ridiculously tight suit (which apparently makes you play tablet games better)
The entire human population lay their hopes on one boy who is very good at playing tablet and computer games
Boy kills bully and feels sad (apparently)
Boy doesn't want to kill anymore, but his sister convinces him to go on (while on a boat, extraordinary)
Boy thinks he's playing a game but it's actually real life (duh?!)
Boy accidentally kills the entire alien population and commits mass genocide thinking he was playing a computer game, as well as killing millions of humans
Boy feels sad
Boy has a dream of his sister
Boy runs into the desert to find a mantis and carries its egg
Boy says some stupid monologue and flies off with an egg
The end

I'm glad I watched this online and didn't waste my money on this. Everything seemed too fake, and the game of "capture the other teams hole" was pointless, and was only there so he could meet a girl who will eventually give him a gas mask which he doesn't use in the end. 10 minutes into the film I kind of realised that he might accidentally kill every alien in the universe, so well done me.

I would only watch this film if they said I could go into their fancy schmancy space school

Gravity

Hi guys, I’ll be reviewing one of the latest hits in the movie world, Gravity. Before I go into detail, here are a few scores to round up this movie:

Overall score: 9 out of 10

Plot score: 9 out of 10

Visual effects score: 10 out of 10

Characters: 8 out of 10

One word to describe: exhilarating

Gravity, a movie that explains the potential dangers of venturing in outer space, has been declared to be a mesmerising and captivating experience, with several awards, including four BAFTA’s, to send any other competing movie into the depths of space. Not only this, but Gravity also has near five star reviews from all the reviewers online, and so I decided to give this potentially mind-blowing movie a try. As soon as it had started, the visual effects are really living up to their expectations; I would watch this movie again just to witness the visual effects another time, because they really are a quality that is out of this world. Aside the visual effects, this movie is based on an interesting plot that captivates the audience as they are guided through the heart-stopping experience of two astronauts attending a space station: the beginning of the movie was particularly gripping, with the viewers nervously waiting to figure out what has caused some satellites to go missing (and causing half of North America to lose their Facebook!). Some parts of the movie are a little boring, but a few explosions did the trick to snap the viewers back into action (not to give anything away), and the majority of the film is very climactic to keep the audience at the edge of their seats. Gravity also features Sandra Bullock as the main character (an astronaut who was allowed to enter space shortly after completing training in NASA); not an actress I would have imagined to be an astronaut, but she seems to pull it off throughout the movie (NASA might even try persuading her to become an astronaut after this movie). Overall, Gravity definitely deserves the reputation it has built from the numerous awards it has earned, with effects that can trick the viewers into thinking they really are floating in space! I highly recommend watching this movie if you haven’t already.

Rush

Overall Rating: 10/10
One Word to Describe it: Loud

Quite simply, a breath-taking feast of aural magic that will leave any car/F1 enthusiast weeping with joy. Yet, also, excite and entertain those that have never watched racing or that dislike F1. That is the genius behind Ron Howard's Rush. It tells the story of the rivalry between Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), the human incarnations of fire and ice. Lauda is a ruthless, calculating winner that uses every ounce of talent and science to fuel his hunger to beat the opposition; Hunt is a partying playboy that also has a more talented, focused side to him. Rush portrays all aspects of both these characters brilliantly, thanks in no small part to the superb acting of Bruhl and Hemsworth. It is when these two are racing, however, that Rush really comes alive. There is nothing in the world quite like the sound of an F1 car's engine, screaming at over 10,000rpm, a raw, naked sound that livens and arouses the ear like nothing else in existence. And as this noise surrounds you, and you look at Lauda and Hunt dancing around the track, you realise-this film is brilliant. Mind bogglingly brilliant. Without a doubt the best film ever made about F1 (although I would also recommend taking a look at the film Senna) and one of the best films of the past decade. And you don't even have to appreciate cars to realise that.

The Dark Knight Rises

(This is posted on behalf of our newest member Iain)

Hi guys I'm Iain and this is my first review for the 1 2 3 movie crew. Today I'm reviewing "The Dark Knight Rises" the final movie in the most recent batman trilogy. So here as some quick stats. Overall -9/10 Plot- 9/10 One word to describe- breathtaking TDKR ( the dark knight rises ) is an epic conclusion to one of my favourite movie series of all time. It starts out at Wanye Manor after batman has been gone for many years but makes an explosive return when the villain Bane threatens the safety of Gotham. This movie has so many twists and turns with the plot and the introduction of new characters such as Catwoman. With a super cast featuring Morgan Freeman and Anne Hathaway the latest batman movie is hardly lacking fire power and has an alround star studded cast. The action in TDKR is amazing. These scenes are choreographed beautify and it's not just random violence every move has a purpose. Also with the new vehicles such as "the Bat" vehicular warfare is at it's peak with a breathtaking chase which pushes Batman's skills to the limit. Honestly the only reason didn't give this movie 10/10 is because of the confusing time scale. I couldn't tell how much time was separating crucial events. Aside from this TDKR is one of my all time favourite films and I hope this encourages people to watch it if they haven't done so already.

Anchorman 2

Overall Rating: 8/10
One Word to Describe it: Hilarious

Continuing on the success of Ron Burgundy in the first film, Anchorman 2 is right up there with its predecessor for humour and wit. Ron Burgundy is now happy and has a wife and son, until she dumps him for another man due to her being made head of the Network and Burgundy being fired. Burgundy feels that his wife has betrayed him and leaves. He is soon hired by the Global News Network and gets his old team of  Champ Kind, Brian Fantana and the hysterical to watch Brick back together. The relationship between the 4 is warm and humorous and is a highlight throughout the film, particularly exchanges between Will Ferrell and Paul Ruud as Burgundy and Fantana. However, some jokes are a bit overrun such as the racism and stereotypes that Ferrell shows towards his new black boss and her family. The film has its best moments at the end when it cumulates in an almost ridiculously funny battle between all the global news networks with Burgundy reconciling with his family and Brick finding a soul mate. Even the most stony-hearted people will find it hard to not enjoy the wit and vitality of Burgundy and his comrades.

The Hobbit the Desolation of Smaug

Overall Rating: 10/10
One Word to Describe it: Epic

This is a must see film for fans of the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings and for people that have seen the first hobbit film. Not only is this latest instalment more action packed but also, surprisingly, contains more humour as well (Bombur's barrel scene will leave you breathless). However the star of the show is without a doubt Smaug. The special effects used to bring him to life are truly spectacular and with Benedict Cumberbatch adding his sinister, menacing voice to the dragon Smaug is a visual feast to behold. The scene where Bilbo and Smaug have a battle of wits is excellent, with dialogue fast paced and tense, and the chemistry between Smaug and Bilbo adds to the atmosphere of anxiousness. The only noticeable criticism of this film is that instead of being filmed at the industry standard frame rate of 24 frames per second the Hobbit was filmed at 48 frames per second. This causes the movie to look a bit like the soap operas and TV dramas you see on the television and may be a problem over the 3 hour viewing time. But this is of little concern if you just want to go and see a good movie. The film ends on a well timed cliffhanger and if you have seen this film you will definitely want to be going along to the Hobbit: There and Back Again this December.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail 16/2/14

Comedy:10
Overall:9.3
One word to describe it: side-splitting

I'd like to use my first post to review what I think is one of the greatest comedies in the history of film. That is, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, at over thirty years old(1975), this film has legendary status in the world of comedy.

A parody of the traditional legend of King Arthur and the Holy Grail. Arthur and his squire recruit the Knights of the Round Table, including Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot, Sir Galahad the Pure, and last but by no means least, the aptly named Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film. During his search for knights, Arthur encounters the Black Knight, whose quote "It's only a flesh wound." is among the most famous in the world of comedy. After gathering his knights, Arthur leads them to Camelot, where he decides against going to the castle, describing it as "A silly place." God appears out of the clouds (in the form of cricket icon W.G. Grace) to tell Arthur to seek the Holy Grail.

Showing the best of Monty Python's comedy talent, this film is funny even during the opening credits. Featuring the hilarious  acting of the Python team, and Terry Gilliam's waggish animations, no wonder Rotten Tomatoes gave it 97%. It's even the best selling British film ever in America. Despite it's old age, the Holy Grail's wit shines through. The Knights of Ni, the Rabbit, and Castle Anthrax have secured their place in movie history. This is one of the films I love!

LEGO MOVIE REVIEW 15/02/14

Hey, this is my first ever review, don't forget there is still vacancies to be part of the team!

Before I begin I only just realised with this 'wonderful' new font the exclamation marks look like this ! and it may seem like an l but its not.

Quick Stats

Overall rating                       9.7/10
Humour                               9/10
One word to describe it       Awesome!

Boring stuff about my life:

I first found out about the movie from my lego club magazine 5 months ago, and have been patiently waiting for it ever since. Finally yesterday, 14th of February it was finally realeased! I went with my friends to a Odeon cinema to see it, they had a promotion going on where if you bought a kids meal you could get a limited edition emmet in pyjamas or a freaky looking robot DJ robot mini fig. Now onto the main review!

Review (Finally!):   <- coincidently that made a sad face hmmp.

The Lego movie is 100 mins long, and is a CGI full animation film, not stop motion if that's what your wanting! There are the voices of many famous people such as Elizabeth banks and Morgan Freeman (yes nelson mandela himself!). The film is super humorous as you would expect from the Lego company. It contains so much comic violence (funny) that if this was made with real life actors then it would be a 18! stuff included like a fully naked lego man, lego people getting speared, cut in half etc. only in Lego could this be a U LOL! This was the only film that has ever made me openly laugh in a cinema, even the parents chuckled (a little). The film at the end combines real life actors with a lego city CGI scene, so it's a good balnce of real life and fiction.

Lego has used this movie as a giant advertising board for all it's products, there are also many cameo appearance from the Lego star wars series, Abraham Lincoln, Superheroes, TMNT and batman himself. I bet you after watching the film loads of kiddies are going to buy the official Lego Movie toys!

The film follows Emmet a 'normal' lego figure who is wrongly chosen as the special one to help stop the evil Mr.Business from destroying the world, (kind of like Kung Fu panda huh?). On the way he is helped by Lucy (wyldstyle), batman, vetruvius (Morgan Freeman), unikitty and metal beard. I don't want give too much away but it contain the usual Lego quirks and charms. Also the song 'Everything is awesome is soooooo addictive, I just can't get it out of my head!

I would reccomend this film to everyone, it contains all the pretty colours (<- I'm british so spell it this way for all you yankies out there) and shapes that will attract hordes of little people and enough comic violence and humour to entertain the old folk of the community!

Well I hope you enjoyed this review please comment for any further suggestions and email me on Zhentengshen@gmail.com to join the team, or simply become a friend! Remember to subscribe guys and girls!
