The Art of Flight

The Art of Flight
Overall rating: 9/10
Visual effects: >10/10
One word description: Awe-inspiring
Director: Curt Morgan
Cast/ riders: Travis Rice, Mark Landvik, John Jackson, Nicolas Müller, Scotty Lago, Bjorn Leines, David Carrier Porcheron "DCP", Jeremy Jones, Pat Moore, Eero Niemela, Kyle Clancy, Eric Willett, Bode Merrill, Jack Mitrani, Luke Mitrani, Mark McMorris, Jake Blauvelt

The Art of Flight, one of the most expensive and mind-boggling snowboard film ever, brought to you by Red Bull and Brain Farm Productions, received a lot of hype (in the snowboard community) before it's release in 2011, and certainly lived up to the expectations. Although it is a snowboard film, the film was aimed at every one and is essentially trying to show what snowboarding really is to snowboarder. The film follows Professional snowboarder Travis Rice across three continents to some of the most jaw-dropping scenery and shows riders performing breathtaking tricks in the most stunning visuals (thanks to the hefty budget of Red Bull). During the film we are shown the different ups and downs of snowboarding, what its like when everything is perfect, with blue skies, fresh snow and almost endless fuel in the chopper, and what its like when thing don't go exactly to plan, with strong winds, a helicopter broken down on the edge of a cliff, and avalanches almost killing friends. As with most sports films, the sounds track is very important, and with Red Bull owning record deals with artist such as M83 the sound track delivers an extra bit of crazy to this master piece of a film. All this and there's the voice of famous riders speaking in a philosophical guru kinda way. I think that no matter what your view is on extreme sports, this film will not fail to impress you and change your thoughts on the lunatics who we see once every four years throwing them selves around on snow at the Winter Olympics.

Tron: Legacy

Overall Rating: 7/10
One Word to Describe it: Decent

The sequel to the 1982 science fiction success of Tron, Tron: Legacy is an average film that is able to do an ok job in filling its predecessor's boots. The acting trio of Jeff Bridges, Garrett Headland and Olivia Wilde are mediocre in their dialogue and chemistry but do a good job in keeping the film moving along and don't really do anything particularly wrong. The plot, also, is distinctly lukewarm. Throughout most of Tron: Legacy the picture is dark and this causes some problems in seeing what is going on, so in the last 5 minutes when light finally comes into the film you are left slightly stunned. In fact, one of the only outstanding aspects of this film is the soundtrack, courtesy of Daft Punk. Mixing deep electronic tones with instrumental magic, the soundtrack keeps the (at some times boring) film chugging along nicely. The visual effects are also commendable, with blues, oranges and blacks weaved together effectively, creating a futuristic look around the movie. All in all, Tron: Legacy is a good way to spend 2 and a half hours when there's nothing really else to do, but if you can't stomach it then at least buy Daft Punk's soundtrack.

Ender's Game

Stupidity- 10/10

Mass Alien Genocide By Accident (MAGBA) rating- 10/10

Overall rating- 2/10

Ender's game is definitely without a shadow of a doubt the second worst film I have ever seen in my life. For a start who in their right mind would call their child Ender, it's almost as if they knew he will END the war and save the day, as well as getting bullied. So to sum up quickly the entire plot of the film:

Boy has a worryingly suspicious bond with his sister
Boy goes to fancy schmancy space academy
Boy beats a bully up, after beating him on a tablet game
Boy thinks he is out of space school
Boy is recruited by Indiana Jones to go to extra fancy schmancy space school
Boy trains up and defies all odds to win a "capture the other teams hole game" (in zero gravity)
Boy wears a funny yellow ridiculously tight suit (which apparently makes you play tablet games better)
The entire human population lay their hopes on one boy who is very good at playing tablet and computer games
Boy kills bully and feels sad (apparently)
Boy doesn't want to kill anymore, but his sister convinces him to go on (while on a boat, extraordinary)
Boy thinks he's playing a game but it's actually real life (duh?!)
Boy accidentally kills the entire alien population and commits mass genocide thinking he was playing a computer game, as well as killing millions of humans
Boy feels sad
Boy has a dream of his sister
Boy runs into the desert to find a mantis and carries its egg
Boy says some stupid monologue and flies off with an egg
The end

I'm glad I watched this online and didn't waste my money on this. Everything seemed too fake, and the game of "capture the other teams hole" was pointless, and was only there so he could meet a girl who will eventually give him a gas mask which he doesn't use in the end. 10 minutes into the film I kind of realised that he might accidentally kill every alien in the universe, so well done me.

I would only watch this film if they said I could go into their fancy schmancy space school

Gravity

Hi guys, I’ll be reviewing one of the latest hits in the movie world, Gravity. Before I go into detail, here are a few scores to round up this movie:

Overall score: 9 out of 10

Plot score: 9 out of 10

Visual effects score: 10 out of 10

Characters: 8 out of 10

One word to describe: exhilarating

Gravity, a movie that explains the potential dangers of venturing in outer space, has been declared to be a mesmerising and captivating experience, with several awards, including four BAFTA’s, to send any other competing movie into the depths of space. Not only this, but Gravity also has near five star reviews from all the reviewers online, and so I decided to give this potentially mind-blowing movie a try. As soon as it had started, the visual effects are really living up to their expectations; I would watch this movie again just to witness the visual effects another time, because they really are a quality that is out of this world. Aside the visual effects, this movie is based on an interesting plot that captivates the audience as they are guided through the heart-stopping experience of two astronauts attending a space station: the beginning of the movie was particularly gripping, with the viewers nervously waiting to figure out what has caused some satellites to go missing (and causing half of North America to lose their Facebook!). Some parts of the movie are a little boring, but a few explosions did the trick to snap the viewers back into action (not to give anything away), and the majority of the film is very climactic to keep the audience at the edge of their seats. Gravity also features Sandra Bullock as the main character (an astronaut who was allowed to enter space shortly after completing training in NASA); not an actress I would have imagined to be an astronaut, but she seems to pull it off throughout the movie (NASA might even try persuading her to become an astronaut after this movie). Overall, Gravity definitely deserves the reputation it has built from the numerous awards it has earned, with effects that can trick the viewers into thinking they really are floating in space! I highly recommend watching this movie if you haven’t already.

Rush

Overall Rating: 10/10
One Word to Describe it: Loud

Quite simply, a breath-taking feast of aural magic that will leave any car/F1 enthusiast weeping with joy. Yet, also, excite and entertain those that have never watched racing or that dislike F1. That is the genius behind Ron Howard's Rush. It tells the story of the rivalry between Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), the human incarnations of fire and ice. Lauda is a ruthless, calculating winner that uses every ounce of talent and science to fuel his hunger to beat the opposition; Hunt is a partying playboy that also has a more talented, focused side to him. Rush portrays all aspects of both these characters brilliantly, thanks in no small part to the superb acting of Bruhl and Hemsworth. It is when these two are racing, however, that Rush really comes alive. There is nothing in the world quite like the sound of an F1 car's engine, screaming at over 10,000rpm, a raw, naked sound that livens and arouses the ear like nothing else in existence. And as this noise surrounds you, and you look at Lauda and Hunt dancing around the track, you realise-this film is brilliant. Mind bogglingly brilliant. Without a doubt the best film ever made about F1 (although I would also recommend taking a look at the film Senna) and one of the best films of the past decade. And you don't even have to appreciate cars to realise that.
